Life Being Homeless: A Family's Beginning

A journey of resilience, support, and new beginnings

Initial setup in the family hostel

Urgent Transition from Private Tenancy

In 2015, the conditions in our previous private tenancy deteriorated severely, affecting our health and well-being. Securing a place in the family hostel, owned by United Welsh near Caerphilly train station, became urgent. We were fortunate to receive a placement despite high demand, allowing us to start anew in a safer environment.

Adapting to life in the hostel

Mixed Emotions: Safety and Fear

The move to the hostel brought mixed feelings. With our first daughter, Luna, on the way, we felt relief in finding a secure place. However, adjusting to life in a hostel was challenging, and the journey felt both promising and daunting.

Support services providing stability

Support Services and a Sense of Stability

Throughout our stay, additional support services, like food aid and family assistance programs, played a crucial role in helping us feel safe and grounded. These services provided stability, allowing us to focus on building a foundation for our family’s future.

Looking towards a stable future

Challenges in Securing the Next Tenancy

Saving money while living in a hostel proved to be a challenge. Daily expenses quickly added up, and strained housing services often resulted in longer stays for many. Fortunately, we managed to move forward after roughly a year, beginning a new chapter with hope for stability.

Reflections and looking forward

Reflections on the Hostel Experience

Our time in the family hostel was vastly different from our experience in a young male’s hostel. The family-oriented environment fostered a sense of support and security, which was essential during this period of transition. The connections we made offered a sense of community and comfort as we looked toward the future.
